Nonsurgical treatment of spinal problems

Pain in the back and usually the spine affects a large number of patients. At Germanten Hospital a patient can receive complete non-surgical care of back pain caused by spinal problems. Dr. Mir Jawad Zar Khan is one of the most experienced orthopedic doctors in India and has done post-graduate studies in Germany's renowned orthopedic institute in Munich. He has worked at Breach Candy Hospital Mumbai & Max Hospital Delhi with the leading experts in the field.

What is the structure of the spine?

The spine is a collection of over thirty bones that support the whole body and make it mobile and flexible. Within them lies an essential part of the central nervous system, the spinal cord, which helps the work of the brain. To these bones called vertebrae, are connected ligaments and muscular structures that allow us to perform all the movements and to assume the most articulated postures.

The spine is divided into:

  • Cervical (seven cervical vertebrae)
  • Dorsal (twelve dorsal vertebrae)
  • Lumbar (five lumbar vertebrae)
  • Sacral (five sacral vertebrae)
  • Coccyx

The vertebrae are separated from each other by intervertebral discs, real bearings that avoid the friction of these bones with each other and cushion movements

Causes of back pain

Back pain can be induced by many reasons and present different characteristics, which must be carefully investigated to be able to issue a precise differential diagnosis and identify the most appropriate therapeutic approach on a case-by-case basis.

The main types of back pain found in clinical practice include:

  • uncomplicated/non-specific low back pain (by far the most widespread, often associated with acute muscle contraction or ligament stretching and in many cases, not a well-defined cause);
  • sciatica (inflammation of the sciatic nerve, which starts from the lumbar region of the spine and it runs along the back of the leg to the hollow of the knee, to then branch out to the foot);
  • osteoarthritis of the lumbar, dorsal or cervical vertebrae (with consequent inflammation of the soft tissues surrounding the affected vertebral tract and reactive muscular contracture), associated or not with discopathies (disc herniation, cervical hernias, etc.) and/or marrow suffering spinal;
  • • the "whiplash" (violent, sudden and extremely painful contracture of the lumbar muscles during the execution of a sudden movement of the back)
  • vertebral "compression" fractures are resulting from trauma or spontaneous (the latter being frequent in those suffering from severe osteoporosis).

Regardless of the cause that induced back pain, the presence of a possible neurological compromise on the spinal nerves or spinal cord is signaled by the onset of pain that radiates to other points of the body (arms and hands in the case of cervicalgia; legs and feet in the case of low back pain), accompanied by tingling, altered sensitivity (to heat / cold, pressure, etc.), loss of strength and muscle control. If there is bone marrow suffering in the cervical area, dizziness, balance difficulties, leg instability, incontinence and difficulty walking can also occur.
