What is Shoulder Joint Replacement?

This is also called Shoulder Arthroplasty, which is an option when the shoulder joint pain deters performing the daily activities and other treatments don’t bring relief.
Usually, in a Shoulder Replacement surgery, the doctor replaces the ends of the damaged Humerus and scapula bones of the shoulder joint or caps them with plastic or metal and plastic and then the components are held in place with cement.

There are different Shoulder Joint Replacement options:

  • Total Shoulder Replacement :
  • The arthritic joint surfaces are replaced with a highly polished metal ball attached to the stem and a plastic socket.

  • Stemmed Hemiarthroplasty :
  • Head of the humerus is replaced with a metal ball and stem. Resurfacing Hemiarthroplasty Replacing of the joint surface of the humerus head with a cap-like prosthesis without the stem. Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement The socket and metal ball are switched, i.e., the metal ball is attached to the shoulder bone while the plastic socket is attached to the humerus.

When is it needed?

The shoulder problems that bring about the need for shoulder replacement surgery are:

  • Osteoarthritis: wear and tear lead[ to softening and wearing away of the cartilage that cushions the shoulder. The bones rub against each other causing pain and stiffness.
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis: the synovial membrane surrounding the joint inflames and thickens, damaging the cartilage causing cartilage loss, pain and stiffness.
  • Post-Traumatic Arthritis: This follows a serious shoulder injury where the bones surrounding the shoulder fractures or torn shoulder ligaments might damage the articular cartilage over time. Shoulder pain and limited shoulder function ensue.
  • Rotator Cuff Arthropathy: The rotator cuff leads to arthritis and cartilage damage.
  • Osteonecrosis: deficiency of blood supply to the bone causes shoulder joint to deform. Severe shoulder fractures and a previously failed shoulder replacement
  • The need for shoulder surgery arises when:

Severe pain limits the daily routine like walking, climbing stairs, sitting and getting up from chairs.
Pain while resting or sleeping at night.Weakness and loss of shoulder motion. When other shoulders joint pain treatments, medications and physical therapy don’t bring relief.
Shoulder pain may be localized or may be referred to areas around the shoulder or down the arm. Shoulder pain or tenderness and, occasionally, a bump in the middle of the top of the shoulder (over the AC joint) are signs that a separation may have occurred.
The dislocated shoulder is when the head of the humerus is out of the shoulder joint. shoulder Fracture can include heavy pain in bones. The supraspinatus is most commonly involved in a rotator cuff tear. May occur fracture in rotator cuff tear.
